5A classic Tchaikovsky Second Concerto, plus astonishing Richter
By Santa Fe Listener
The reissue gods are smiling. This bargain Gemini two-fer contains four superlative concerto recordings–the Tchaikovsky Second and Third with Gilels, the Prokofiev Fifth and Bartok Second with Richter. The conductor throughout is Lorin Maazel, definitely on best behavior, and the orchestras vary between the LSO (Prokofiev), New Philharmonia (Tchaikovsky), and the Orchestre de Paris (Bartok). EMI’s early Seventies analog sound is bright and forward. The perspective on the piano is natural with Gilels, but as usual, Richter asked to be miked more up close.

4Gilels thrills and entertains.
By Paul Dykstra
This disc features the Tchaikovsky G Major Piano Concerto, with Lorin Maazel as conductor, and the fabulous Gilels as pianist- the last time he recorded this piece, I believe. Here he plays with the usual unremitting volcanic intensity- he’s a pianist of power, glory, and an unmistakable sound. The way the piece is recorded, you can actually experience the straining of the instrument as it keeps up with Gilels’ demands. I mean this in a positive sense, the same way that a great racing car might be taxed to its fullest potential given the best driver and most demanding courses…… Musically, it’s the Russians you want playing Russian music! The only other offering I’ve seen to compare is Pletnev on YouTube- his elegant, aristocratic rendering is like a polar opposite to Gilels’ “take no prisoners” approach. One might, perhaps, want a more pliant piano or pianissimo sound in the case of the offering in question, but this little quibble takes nothing away from the majesty and sheer willpower in every note he plays! Recommended for lovers of Tchaikovsky and Gilels. The Tchaikovsky G Major Concerto deserves to be every bit as well known and popular as the Bb minor concerto.
