Album DescriptionThis four-CD set presents a selection of performances by a young lion of the keyboard: Vladimir Horowitz. Dating from 1928 to 1947, these classic recordings document the piano virtuoso at his most fiery and fearless. The repertoire ranges from Baroque and Classical scores (Scarlatti, Haydn, Beethoven, Mendelssohn) to the great Romantics (Chopin, Schumann, Liszt, Rachmaninoff), 20th-century pieces (Debussy, Poulenc, Prokofiev) and transcriptions by Horowitz himself. Pristine copies of the introductory HMV/Victor 78s were transposed and digitally remastered using the state-of-the-art CAP 440 technique. The handsomely illustrated 84-page booklet features an introduction by Pulitzer Prize-winner Tim Page and a perceptive essay by New York Times critic Paul Griffiths (“Vladimir Horowitz: Portrait of the Artist as a Young Lion”), as well as elaborate artisan biographies from The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians.

First rate collection of early Horowitz recordings By James Driese In the spirit of the old RCA and EMI classical recordings, musical fidelity is retained in addition to the surface noise present in all old 78rpm records. It is with great relief and pleasure to find that Andante understands that further attempts at noise reduction result only in loss of fidelity. These recordings retain their original sound quality. In fact, they sound better and you cannot beat the convenience of the CD format. This is an amazing collection and represents Horowitz at his best although in my opinion, Horowitz was a memorable performer at every stage of his long career. Included is a substantial collection of photographs and notes which make this admittedly expensive collection a good value. This is one of my finest purchases; I only regret waiting so long before adding it to my collection.

a lot of Horowitz performance but all are in extremely poor recording quality By Cho Fai Chan Very very very very very poor recording quality not because of the aged performance but the poor transaction from LP to CD, you will listen a lot of “click click” sound, and volume varies in sin wave because of poor turning table is used. I am so regret that I bought this CD. This CD set is in trash quality, please save your money and buy something else.
